Meet Christie Ann.
I believe that learning has many layers. All are valuable: the easy, the risky, the tough. Let’s face it: learning is a risky endeavor. Many of us overlook our strengths—our super layers—either because we are young and haven’t developed metacognition skills, or we are just too frustrated by school to focus. My most enjoyable teaching moments are when kids finally view themselves as a “good writer” or a “smart reader” because they have finally unlocked the layers in their brain (hint, hint: neuroplasticity) that help them develop new skills.
My path towards teaching and learning has also been multi-layered. While my foundation is built upon teaching reading and writing, I taught science for six years, started Model UN programs, led outdoor education programming, designed a STEAM lab from scratch, and built Capstone projects. I have also played an integral role in school placement. I see the whole child because I have taught the whole child.
All experiences have led me to train as an Educational Therapist so that I can help students move beyond simply mastering content. I endeavor to coach students into building the cognitive and emotional awareness that deepens their learning.
I am an award-winning and published poet who has been granted fellowships in Portugal, Kenya, and Lithuania. I bring a creative and out-of-the-box edge to my practice.
One last qualification: I’m a mama to four-year-old twin boys.
